PHA receive silver workplace health award

Staff at Penwith Housing Association (PHA) recently received a Silver Workplace Health Award. The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly award is a county standard of good practice and a quality mark of health and well-being in the workplace.

Andy Moore, Chief Executive of PHA commented: “PHA decided to sign up to the Healthy Workplace project because we have been advocating this ethos for a long time. We were delighted to receive a silver award first time around and will continue to support the Healthy Workplace initiative and improve the general health and well-being of staff across the company by working towards the gold award. Congratulations must go to all staff for their efforts as being healthy and active is not always the easy option."

Many people spend the largest proportion of their time at work and contributing to the health of employees has a knock on effect upon the health of an organisation. PHA encourages a healthy lifestyle in many ways including being part of a cycle to work scheme; and promoting health awareness with workshops during national stress awareness week, to name but a few. A pedometer challenge has recently been introduced and 60 members of staff are currently virtually walking around the South West Coast Path. A team is also entering the inaugural ‘Cornwall Beach Games’ in the summer. Plans are already being made to achieve a gold award next year and staff are all encouraged to contribute any ideas they may have to the Healthy Workplace champions in their offices.

Awards were presented to business of all sizes at a ceremony in Wadebridge by Dame Carol Black. Dame Carol is the National Director for Health and Work and has called for a new approach to work-related health services since her government commissioned review found that ill health was costing the country £100bn annually.
