For 28 years Angela Hutchings has cared for older people living in sheltered accommodation. In 1980 Angela became deputy warden at Harveys Way, Hayle and then became a full time warden at Tregarthen, St Ives in 1991 and has spent the last 8 years as a support worker for the residents of Penwith Housing Association’s sheltered accommodation at Marazion.
Over that time she has helped make the lives of hundreds of older people more happy and comfortable, day by day, working first for the Penwith District Council and for the past 15 years with Penwith Housing Association (PHA).
Mrs Hutchings of St Levan Road, who has two children and six grandchildren, has loved the work. Every day she has visited some 80 pensioners “to see that everyone is all right” at Boltern Road, St Levan Road and Close and Trevenner Road. “Their ages today range from 60 to about 95” she commented. “I have enjoyed all the work over the years, from the day I started. It has been very satisfying and worthwhile. For some of them my visit has been the link with their families here and up-country”. She has also been on night-time call. Each resident has an emergency relay to the Carrick council offices at Truro.
Mrs Hutchings, formerly of Ludgvan, worked on the land and in other jobs before becoming a support worker and warden and has now retired through ill-health, following a fall.
PHA Chief Executive, Andy Moore, accompanied by Service Manager, Steve Adey, visited Angela at her home in Marazion to thank her for her work. “Angela is one of PHA’s longest serving members of staff and we are very grateful to her for the support and care she has provided to her residents over the years. We all wish her the very best for the future.”
Recently she presented a cheque for nearly £3,300 – raised by her friends – to the Marazion surgery towards a piece of equipment.
