Children at Carbis Bay are choosing the name for the 20 home new development close their school. All 250 children had this rare opportunity. The pupils at St Uny’s Church of England School have submitted 60 possible names for a selection panel to make a final decision.
“The building project is at Polmennor Drive and comprises 12 houses, 2 flats and a bungalow to rent together with 5 houses for ‘home-buy’ and is the result of a partnership between Devon & Cornwall Housing Association, PHA, Penwith District Council and the Housing Corporation” said Andy Moore, Chief Executive of Penwith Housing Association (PHA).
The building work is by Rok of Truro and the whole scheme has cost approximately £3.5 million. In this group of four children, busy choosing a name, are two from the school’s Year 2 and two from Year 4.
The Head Teacher, Lyn McNamara, commented: “A lot of our children did some research into Cornish history of the area and some of their names tell of the old mines, such as Wheal Laity, while some are such as Sunny Avenue and Seagull Close.”
“I am happy they are building low-cost homes for local people, but concerned we have no room to take extra pupils. We are full – in fact over-subscribed. One class went over to see the foundations laid and brickwork being carried out and saw the JCB in action. They were studying housing and homes at the time” she added.
The selection panel will include the Head Teacher, Deputy Mayor of St Ives (Cllr Y Watson), PHA board member Norman Emberson, Mrs Rogers (former owner of the land) and Mrs Bev Trenwith, PHA Housing Officer and their recommendation will be put forward to St Ives Town Council and Penwith District Council.
Local people who wish to be considered for the homes need to be registered on Penwith District Council’s Homeseekers Register.
