“The environment of our neighbourhoods is very important” emphasised Jonathan Sprague, Property Services Director at the recent Grounds Maintenance Open Day
Contractors from around Cornwall staged displays of their professional skills hoping to impress visitors and win contracts for some four thousand PHA homes.
Jonathan added: “we want a service that meets the needs of tenants so the opportunity for residents to meet potential contractors is invaluable”
Harry Fitzgerald, response maintenance manager said: “The tenders are for three separate contracts: grass cutting; grounds maintenance in Penwith and grass and grounds in the rest of Cornwall. The aim is to carry out the work to the highest standards.” He added, “this is the first show of its kind we have staged. Over the years things have changed and it is now a more comprehensive schedule”.
Residents who attended the day found it useful. According to Gill Barnes from Marazion “The Open Day proved to be very interesting and a great opportunity us to see the standards being set for the new grounds maintenance contract.”
Her view was echoed by Daniel Green from Redruth “All of the contractors demonstrated high levels of competence. I feel confident that whoever gains the contract will provide a service that will benefit tenants.”
Contractors were keen to show what they could offer. Director, David Lubman, of Landscape Southwest of Launceston said they were “big enough to cope and small enough to care”. They deal with many local authorities and housing associations in the county.
David Roskilly from R. H. Olds of Roseworthy said: It is a major contract to us.” They run a flexible business with six full time workers and with other staff who can be called on to help when times are very busy.
