New windows - done and dusted

Nearly 200 houses and flats in West Cornwall have been double-glazed over the last few months by Penwith Housing Association (PHA), part of the Devon and Cornwall Housing group.

Park Court windowsThe work has been carried out at two large estates in Heamoor; Park Court in the centre of Penzance and at some properties at Vounder Glaze, St Just.

Cornwall Councillor, Mario Fonk, commented “It has made a huge difference to the tenants of Nicholas Parc and Roscadghill Parc. The work is of a very high standard and people have told me they have already noticed a difference in their fuel bills.”

Mr Fonk who is the council’s ‘Equality and Diversity Champion’ added: “I approached PHA some time ago about this and to their credit they have found the money and done the estates proud.I have not heard one complaint.About 110 homes were double-glazed at Roscadghill and over 40 at Nicholas Parc.” Mr Fonk’s work with Cornwall Council is to promote fairness and ensure everyone is treated ‘equally and right’. It keeps me very busy and I enjoy it,remarked Mr Fonk who has lived in Cornwall for nearly 40 years.

Sandra Nicholls, who lives at Park Court and is a member of the Peninsula Tenants’ Committee was equally warm in her praise of the workmanship and helpfulness of the two men who carried out the job on the 15 flats. “We are thrilled to bits with the work. The men were polite and pleasant, they helped the residents to take down their curtains and then put them back up when the task was finished” she said.Mrs Nicholls, who has lived at Park Court for six years, said the whole job took about 10 days using a scaffolding tower so as not to block the adjoining footpath. The larger single window now comprises two opening windows with new ones also in bathrooms and kitchens. “We couldn’t have asked for more caring folk” she added. The court is in a conservation area and was subject to planning permission. The new windows follow the court’s successful landscaping and garden improvement scheme.

Andy Moore, PHA Chief Executive commented “Our investment in our homes is continuing with more properties to have replacement windows in 2011/12. We know this work is popular with residents and it compliments our investment in decent homes.
