Visions of the future that ranged from adult college courses to modern light bulbs and fire prevention were displayed to hundreds at the ‘one-stop-shop money matters’ advice show at St John’s Hall, Penzance.
Throughout the day residents came along to access the latest news and views on money matters that ranged from home insurance to neighbourhood service and useful hobbies.
Up to 20 displays around the hall showed the work of local organisations that were welcomed by the Mayor, Councillor Roy Mann, a board member of Penwith Housing Association (PHA) that staged the event through Cath Harvey.
“It covers the many needs of a lot of people” he remarked as he toured the busy scene, welcoming the exhibitors. The theme was that there was ‘something for everybody’ to benefit from.
Community groups; Job Centre Plus; Truro and Penwith College; Age Concern; Citizens Advice, plus local community banking and help with stress and volunteering were among the exhibitions.
“We have aimed to bring together as many supportive agencies in Cornwall as possible and have included personal development as well as assisting people to get back into work” said Norman Emberson a PHA tenant board member who helped organise the event.
A delightful hobbies display came from the local ‘rag rugging’ group – with colourful hanging rugs including one of Mount’s Bay and boats by Cath. Known as the ‘happy hookers’ the members, led by Diane Cox, use scraps from childrens old clothes and other cast-offs – all for free – to stitch into ‘pictures’ of all shapes and sizes.
