Posthumous winner of competition

Out of a sad moment comes success

presentation of cupTwo weeks after his death, Philip Bagot of St Ives and his wife Aileen were the overall winners in our garden contest. Philip was also the individual champion in the ‘older person’s garden’ section.

“It is a memorial for him” said Mrs Bagot, “and he would have loved to have known. Although I did most of the gardening, I did it for him because he enjoyed looking at it. Out of a sad moment has come this success”.

Aileen will receive the trophy at our annual meeting on Thursday 27 September 2007.

The couple moved into their newly built house ten years ago with the garden needing a lot of work.

Aileen remarked “It was full of boulders so I created a two tier garden, using the rocks as part of it. Philip made the patio and together we made the pond and waterfall”.

The rear garden has a dry-stone wall with plants and flowers, including hanging geraniums while the front is partly open plan. Among the flowers are various large-headed Californian fuchsias. They are in colour for most of the year. “My husband specialised in lawns so ours is like a bowling green” Mrs Bagot added.

Our board member Carol Bosworth judged the competition and said “despite the weather there were still lots of gardens to judge. The competition was of extremely high standard and all entrants coped well. The gardens were beautiful and I thank everyone for all their efforts in a difficult year for gardening”.
