Annual chimney sweeping venture

Keeping solid fuel heating systems safe and healthy

A new free service, in conjunction with Cornwall’s ‘Sooty the Sweep’, is being introduced to hundreds of homes that have solid fuel heating systems under the care of Penwith Housing Association (PHA).

“It is hoped that by providing this additional service the health and safety of our residents and properties will be improved” said Andy Moore, PHA Chief Executive.

Annual chimney sweeping will now be a joint venture with tenants. Some 450 PHA homes – from over 6,000 in the county in its management – have at least one type of solid fuel heating.“These residents have been contacted by our contractor ‘Sooty the Sweep’ and an appointment arranged” Andy added.

Fuel deposits in the chimney can cause dangerous chimney fires if they ignite. If airflow in a chimney becomes severely restricted there is a danger that carbon monoxide could build up in the home and poisoning could result.

PHA's involvement in this new venture does not diminish the residents’ responsibilities as detailed in the tenancy agreement.

“If you believe your home has solid fuel heating facilities and you have not been contacted by our contractor, then we would like to hear from you so we can update our records”.
