Tree maintenance at St Clare Flats

Work to protect the road and footpaths

The month of February saw the loss of one of two mature Monterey Cypress trees on land owned by Penwith Housing Association (PHA), adjacent to St Clare Flats at Penzance.

“Following essential maintenance work to the two trees near the West Cornwall Hospital roundabout to attend to branches overhanging the footpath and road for safety reasons, I am sad to say that reports from aboricultural consultants revealed that the trees are suffering from disease and decay to such an extent that one of them has to be moved” said Jonathan Sprague, Property Services Director of PHA.

“The decision has not been taken lightly and follows a long consultation and planning approval process. Both trees at the site were ‘risk assessed’ as part of the Association’s tree management plan as in need of attention. The stump of the Monterey Cypress tree to be removed will be left in place as a condition of the planning approval, as specialists consider retaining it will help the remaining tree. Any decision to replant in the area will depend on the remaining tree and will be reviewed in six months time” added Mr Sprague.

The work was scheduled to begin during the week of 4 February 2008, subject to weather.St Clare Street remained fully open for the duration of this work.
