Although disabled Mrs Ellen Edwards finds time and energy to turn the front garden of her ‘sheltered’ bungalow at St Buryan into a pretty picture.
So much so that she has become the gardening champion of the Penwith Housing Association (PHA) and received the trophy at the annual review at the Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives, on Thursday 24 September.
“It is like a cottage garden – there are many colourful things in it” she said at her Galligan Close home this week. “I enjoy seeing them as they bloom and have pots of flowers around the fence as well”.
Clearly delighted by the award Mrs Edwards, 57, who was entered for the contest by her daughter Sharon of Heamoor, has been at St Buryan for the past two years, after moving from Penzance.
“I am a very keen gardener and enjoy it, but it is hard work. There are gladioli, lupins, agapanthus and lots of others including a large sunflower, I try to grow a bit of everything! Every day I do a little work there – but it is windswept at times” she added.
The winners of the other categories were as follows:
Best General Needs – Mr Thomas, Trevenner Lane, Marazion
Best Vegetable Garden – Mr Putt, Penalverne Place, Penzance
Best Flat – Mrs Blewett, Polweath Close, Penzance
The competition was judged by Carol Bosworth, PHA Board member and Sue Mitchell, PTC member.
