With 18,000 on the waiting list for homes in Cornwall and despite the current ‘credit crunch’ having its effect on developers, Penwith Housing Association (PHA) working in conjunction with Devon and Cornwall Housing Association (DCHA), still has significant building under way.
PHA manages over 6,000 homes in the county and, with partners Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, has schemes in progress across Cornwall.
Whilst there may well have been a slowdown in the construction industry, the need for affordable housing across the county is still acute. The two Associations are still pressing ahead with their building plans and, where appropriate, taking the opportunity to acquire additional homes on joint developments with private householders where these represent value for money.
According to Andy Moore, Chief Executive of PHA “the number of affordable homes on some sites has not materialised as a number of joint developments have either been “mothballed” by developers or the rate of construction has slowed. This has been balanced by the Association providing additional homes on sites already in progress”.
“It makes sense for us, with the support of Cornwall Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, to meet local housing need in Cornwall whilst supporting the construction industry where we can.
