A couple married for 64 years have won the top garden trophy of the Penwith Housing Association.
Edward Roberts, 87, and his wife Katie, 86, have lived for some 20 years at their Carbis Bay bungalow and tend their garden quietly and with care.“This year we thought we would put in begonias and they were beautiful – red, doubles and singles and yellow. We have not got a big garden and the weather hasn’t helped, but it was a mass of colour” said Mrs Roberts.“At the moment it is looking a bit bare but the begonias are still flowering in their sheltered spot.We potter aroundquietly at our own speed – we both use walking sticks – for about a half-hour at a time”.The couple were wed at Ludgvan church and lived in the village before moving to St Ives and then Carbis Bay “and we love it here”.
Mr Roberts, who served in the Royal Navy, also worked at a Lelant garage and at St Ives Rugby Club before retirement. His wife’s father was always a good gardener and won prizes in flower and vegetable shows …… so Mrs Roberts is following in the family tradition.
Judged by PHA Board member Carol Bosworth and PTC member Sue Mitchell, the couple’s garden was overall winner as well as best OAP garden.Special awards also went to Jessica Metcalfe of Polweath Close, Penzance, for her best vegetable garden and to her children for the best garden by under-12 year olds.
