The Coach House showcases its fantastic work to local MP

An Independent Futures scheme, the Coach House based in Penzance, showcased all of its great work in helping to improve the lives of young people to MP Andrew George, local organisations and staff members at a fun open day on Friday 8 July.

The Coach House Open DayThe open day was hugely successful with tenants sharing their stories to Andrew George MP, Jeremy Clayton from Cornwall Council and support workers Helen Pullen and Annmarie Thomas, about how the Coach House has changed their lives for the better.

The open day was also to help residents raise money for an allotment and a top-up on their internet connection. There was a selection of prizes to be won in the raffle and visitors were donating money for food cooked on the BBQ. In total £120 was raised for their cause.

Local businesses were there so the young residents could network and see what opportunities were open to them. Also, as a young people’s service, the staff at the Coach House feel it’s important to promote their services to local organisations in order to be more effective for their young residents.

Suzette Crossman, Team Manager, said; “It’s essential that we make as many connections with the local community as possible so that we can offer a variety of skills to our young residents. We have a certain set of specialised skills and other organisations have a different set of skills to offer. By working together this means our residents will have a range of skills and experience when they leave us, feeling equipped and ready to start their new lives”.

Chantal Pengelly at The Coach HouseChantal Pengelly, 22, resident at The Coach House, said: “After I split up from my partner, I had to move into a night shelter in Camborne until I found out about the Coach House. It wasn’t possible for me to stay with my family so when the Coach House offered me accommodation I was overjoyed. Without the support they gave me I don’t know where I’d be today. They have helped me with my budgeting, job searches, help me read my post as I’m Dyslexic and helped me get ID. I have a personal development plan with a key worker every week and they ask me how things are going and see whether I need any further support. I feel so secure and happy here and hopefully soon I’ll be able to get a bar job and live independently”.

Cornwall MP, Andrew George, said: “Housing is the biggest social problem that we face in this part of the world and is much harder for young people than any other age group. Organisations that can help the problem are much appreciated and desperately needed. The housing need has got worse over the years but to have independent living along with the support that the Coach House offers is essential. The Coach House is doing a fantastic job here.”
